The oil-to-coal conversion project

stampa pagina

The Porto Tolle thermal plant is  near the Po Delta in the north-eastern province of Rovigo. It consists of 4, 660 MW oil-fuelled thermal  units, put online between 1980 and 1984.

The project aims at converting the 4 existing oil units, with a capacity of 2640 MW, into 3 next-generation, high-efficiency coal power stations  totalling a capacity of 1980 MW.

The project will have a number of new features, such as greater generation efficiency, which will increase from 38% to 45%, and Best Available Techniques (BAT) used to reduce emissions and achieve the best possible environmental performance.
The new plant will also allow to use biomass if available in the area, tto be used combined with fuel coal, thus reducing the overall carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel combustion.
